Our Story
The Lukobe project began with an independent traveler’s desire to support and provide care to some of the many orphaned children in the immediate area. Today over 30 children receive room, board and education at Lukobe’s facilities. Another 15 children are fostered within the community. The children living in this village now are the first generation to have access to primary and secondary education.
The village of Lukobe lies close to the southern shore of Lake Victoria. This region of Africa-like many on this continent-is deeply impacted by poverty, disease, and drought. Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. The vast majority of Tanzanians live on less than a dollar per day.
Here, families are devastated by HIV/AIDS, malaria, and poor nutrition. Education is virtually unattainable for orphaned and underprivileged children. Severe drought and falling market prices reduce local farming to subsistence levels.
The Lukobe project continues to make strides by turning traditional charity into sustainability. By implementing sustainable community projects and micro-businesses, the Lukobe project has helped the community’s working poor to become more economically independent. The Lukobe project is registered with the governments of Tanzania and Canada as a non-government (non-profit) organization.
